Where Your Money Goes Furthest on a European Ski Holiday
One of the first things group organisers research when planning a ski holiday is how much a ski holiday costs. And while this is a practical thing to know, price is not the only thing worth focusing on.
See, if it's a question of where in Europe your money will go furthest, the answer isn't always the resort with the lowest price tag. It’s the one that gives you the most for what you spend.
In this guide, we'll cover the difference between price and value. We'll also define what good value could mean for a ski holiday, and then explain how four of the top ski resorts in Italy and Andorra deliver it.
The Difference: Cheapest Ski Resorts in Europe vs Best Value Ski Resorts
One important thing to note is that paying less for a ski resort doesn't automatically mean you're getting the better deal.
Sure, the lowest-priced ski resort may seem like the obvious choice if you want to save on your holiday. But a resort that costs a little more can sometimes give better value.
Because value can be summed up with this line: is it worth what you paid for it?
When reviewing the price difference between two resorts, you have to consider what you're actually paying for. Lift passes, for instance. Are they included in the price of your room or package? What about the resort's ski area and piste? How much room do you have to ski?
Speaking of rooms, how far are the rooms from the slopes? And can you easily travel between the two?
Let's say resort A costs a quarter less than resort B. However, there are no direct routes to it from the station or terminal. It also serves overpriced food, has no ski-in, ski-out option, and has fewer than ten runs to choose from.
In comparison, another resort offers direct transfers to and from the airport. It serves reasonably-priced food and there are plenty of local eateries nearby. Its piste length is 75km and it has a total of 20 runs that are a mix of green, blue, and red.
For families and groups travelling together, the second resort is a more practical and reasonable choice. For a fraction more, you won't have to worry about transport to the location. You'll have more affordable food options for the entirety of your stay. And if your group is a mix of beginners and experts, there are enough runs to cater to each one's skill level.
So even if the first resort costs less, the second resort has the better value.
Pila, La Thuile, Pal Arinsal, and Grandvalira are excellent examples of great value. They're considered some of the top ski destinations in Europe that are well worth the price you pay.

Pila, Italy
Pila is an alpine ski resort that sits high above the town of Aosta, Italy. It's well known for its high-altitude skiing and panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, and Gran Paradiso.
Visitors have access to a handful of blue runs for beginners and over 20 red and black runs for high-intermediate and advanced skiers. It has 70km of marked piste and 15 total lifts.
The resort is also easily accessible from Aosta via high-speed gondola.
Who It Suits
Pila is best for families skiing together and groups travelling with beginner and beginner-intermediate skiers. The resort boasts an excellent selection of hotels, and the hotels we use up in Pila itself are on a half-board basis for evening meals. So if anyone in the group is tired after a day on the slopes, you won't have to wander far to get food.
Outside of skiing, children and young teenagers might enjoy Pila's snow park.
High-Value Feature
As mentioned earlier, Pila is famous for its stunning scenery. The views that stretch from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn are simply unforgettable.
And if you choose to stay in Pila, several on-site hotels are listed as ski-in, ski-out options, though this is dependent on the snow conditions. This means that if the snow is good, you can ski from the slopes straight to your door (and vice-versa) without having to walk or hitch a ride in heavy ski boots.
Our packages for staying at half-board hotels in Pila include snack-lunch vouchers that you can use at a variety of mountain restaurants.

La Thuile, Italy
Like Pila, La Thuile ski resort is in The Aosta Valley, close to the French border. It shares a ski area with France's La Rosière, giving visitors access to 160km of piste, mostly above 2,000m. It also has an impressive number of blue, red, and black runs and a total of 36 lifts.
Snow conditions in La Thuile are generally excellent as well, given that the slopes are north facing. In the event of a late start, the resort has snow-making facilities to keep the runs covered.
Who It Suits
For small- to medium-sized groups travelling for a ski holiday, La Thuile is an excellent pick. It has 33 blue runs for beginners and intermediate skiers, 32 red runs for high-intermediate to advanced skiers, and 15 black runs for expert skiers looking to challenge themselves.
In fact, the La Thuile black runs were used for the FIS Women's World Cup. For serious skiers, this is definitely something to write home about.
High-Value Feature
When you stay at La Thuile for your ski holiday, you're paying for a grand ski experience. The La Rosière link allows you to ski from Italy into France — and back again — on the same lift pass. La Thuile's panoramic scenery provides an excellent backdrop to such a feat, too.
Lift passes are included in our La Thuile packages, which means one less miscellaneous expense to worry about.
And after a full day of tackling rolling blues, winding reds, and world-famous black runs, you won't have to worry about crowds or noise. La Thuile is a laid-back resort with a relaxed and more subdued atmosphere. Your group should have no trouble getting a full night's rest here.

Pal Arinsal, Andorra
Pal Arinsal is so-named because of the two ski sectors it combines: Pal and Arinsal. These two locations are linked by cable car and share a lift pass. This doesn't necessarily make them the biggest resort on this list in terms of ski area, but the novelty of experiencing both certainly makes up for it.
Arinsal is a picturesque, bowl-like area set at an altitude of 1550m to 2560m. Pal is traditionally alpine, offering tree-lined skiing and a longer length of piste. Together, Pal Arinsal has a grand total of 63km of piste, 31 lifts, and 41 runs that cater to skiers of all ability levels.
Who It Suits
Even though it has 19 red runs and 5 black runs, Pal Arinsal ski resort is the only one on this list so far that has blue and green runs. This makes it one of the best choices for families with children or groups full of beginners, as green runs are the easiest of the lot.
Plus, Pal Arinsal's slope progression is gentle enough that experienced beginners can try intermediate runs if they feel up to it.
High-Value Feature
Pal Arinsal is proof that you don't need a large ski area to get great value out of a ski holiday. While it certainly helps, the full colour range of runs makes this one of the best ski destinations in Europe. Our packages for Pal Arinsal include lift passes, which can help you explore all of what both sectors have to offer: local eateries, stunning views, and great cafes.

Grandvalira, Andorra
Grandvalira lays claim to the title "largest ski area in the Pyrenees." With over 210km of piste and over 100 available runs ranging from green to black, the sheer scale of this resort is awe-inspiring. Coupled with the consistent snow conditions and impressive 2800m altitude, it's easy to see why Grandvalira is a ski enthusiast's dream location.
There are 60 lifts running across six different sectors, allowing visitors to explore each area. From Encamp to Canillo and Soldeu to El Tarter, each part of this vast resort offers something different.
Who It Suits
Seeing as Grandvalira is the largest ski resort on this list, we say it's best suited for large groups and families who are keen on a more grandiose ski holiday. It's also an ideal destination for skiers at the intermediate to expert level, seeing as it has 30 red runs and 25 black runs to explore. The size of the ski area and variety of runs alone bump up the value for dedicated ski enthusiasts.
High-Value Feature
A single lift pass can cover all six sectors in Grandvalira. With every Interski Holidays package, that pass is included. So you can choose the sector that best suits your group as your base and still have the means to wander around. That lift pass lets you explore the entire Grandvalira ski area at your leisure.
Getting Good Value From Your Ski Holiday
Once you’ve picked a resort, there are a couple of other things to consider to help you really elevate your ski holiday:
Timing. February is the busiest time of year across Europe, what with peak ski season and half-term. If your dates are flexible, it’s worth booking within the shoulder seasons. Prices are lower, resorts are less crowded, and snow conditions are still good enough to ski in.
Coach and short breaks. If you and your group have the time for it, consider booking ski holidays by coach. Our coach holidays depart on Saturdays and include 6 nights' accommodation based on availability.
On the other hand, if the people you're travelling with have stricter schedules, you can always take short ski breaks. We have packages that cover trips as short as 3 nights. You'll still get the full Interski Holidays experience — just on a shorter timeline.
Booking early. The sooner you book everything — plane tickets, hotels, transportation, holiday packages — the more leeway you have. You get first pick of choice hotels on your preferred dates.
This is especially important if you're planning a trip with a group. Some hotels have limited availability, and most of their rooms can only fit a maximum of three or four. Given the popularity of the resorts we've listed here, it definitely pays to plan ahead.
